5 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Charity Auctioneer

Choosing the Right Auctioneer Matters

Not all auctioneers are created equal, and not every auctioneer is the right fit for your specific event. Here are five essential questions to ask during your selection process.

1. How many charity/benefit auctions have you conducted?

Experience matters enormously in this field. Commercial auctioneers and charity auctioneers require very different skill sets. You want someone who has extensive experience specifically with nonprofit fundraising events, not just property or estate auctions.

2. Can you share references from similar organizations?

Ask for references from nonprofits similar to yours in size, mission, and event style. A great auctioneer for a black-tie gala raising $500,000 might not be the right fit for a casual community fundraiser, and vice versa.

3. What services are included in your fee?

Some auctioneers include pre-event consultation, event-day MC duties, and fund-a-need facilitation in their base fee. Others charge separately for each service. Make sure you understand exactly what you are getting.

4. How do you approach the fund-a-need/paddle raise?

The fund-a-need segment often raises more money than the live auction itself. Your auctioneer should have a clear, proven strategy for maximizing this crucial moment.

5. What do you need from our team to be successful?

A good auctioneer will tell you exactly what they need to deliver their best performance. This might include information about your donors, your mission story, auction item details, and event logistics.
